School Wide Positive Behavior Support

 

What is SWPBS?

Positive Behavior Support is a 3 tier model of school-wide behavior supportteaching students positive expectations and helping them learn to manage their own behavior. PBS offers a:

  • Consistent and fair behavior plan
  • Research based system
  • Detailed expectaions, procedures and consequences
  • Consistent feedback
  • Positive teacher attention: Four positives to one correction (4:1)

Tier One (all)

  • Teach school wide behavior expectations and procedures
  • Positive reinforcement for all students
  • Consistent consequences for problem behaviors
  • Effective procedures and supervision in non-classroom areas
  • Effective instruction and classroom management

Tier two (some)

  • Target interventions
  • Simple behavior plans
  • Alternatives to suspension
  • Increased academic support
  • School-based mentors
  • Classroom management support
  • Newcomers club

Tier Three (few)

 

  •  Target social skills instruction e.g., anger management
  • Functional behavior assessment and individual behavior plans
  • Parent collaboration and education
  • Collaboration with student's physician or mental health professional
  • Intensive academic support

Why implement PBS?

  • Positive Behavior Support will reduce disruptive students behavior resuting in increased levels of academic engagement, allowing students to:
  • increase control
  • increase time on task, yielding increased confidence and independence
  • increase attendance rates
  • decrease suspension rates
  • increase appropriate social behaviors.

How is PBS implemented?
Positive Behavior Support will be implemented through direct instructionof desired behaviors. Staff will:

 

  • Directly teach desired behaviors
  • Give students opportunities to practice desired behaviors
  • Use classroom discussion
  • Brainstorm actions that show RESPECT
  • Encourage students to role-playing appropriate/inappropriate behaviors
  • Display bulletin boards showing respect, responsibility, and/or safety 

Monthly Incentives
 
  • September Freeze pops and 45 minute recess
  • October Fall Harvest
  • November Board games in designated classroom
  • December Holiday Movie with treat
  • January Doughnuts and hot chocolate or movie in gym/dancing/chips
  • February Pizza and pop
  • March Movie and popcorn (Dr. Suess month)
  • April Watch Tiger game on tv/hot dogs
  • May Popsiscles and 45 minute recess
Criteria forearned incentives
 
  • First quarter-0-6 yellow/1 orange
  • Second quarter 0-6 yellow
  • Third quarter  0-6 yellow
  • Fourth quarter o-6 yellow/1 orange
