Kindergarten - 1st : November
For the month of November, students will learn about depth of space in artwork. Artists use foreground, middle ground, and background to show depth in their work. Foreground items are the closest to the viewer, the largest, and have the most detail. Background items are the farthest away from the viewer, are the smallest, and have very little detail. Middle ground items are right in the middle in terms of how far it is from the viewer, how large it appears on the page, and how much detail it contains.
Students will be working in groups to create large Thanksgiving/autumn themed posters. Students will trace one of 7 different posters on their own large white paper. Then students will be required to draw 3 trees - one in the foreground, one in the middle ground, and one in the background. The entire poster will be colored.
Here is an example poster created by me, Mrs. Castellese:
Notice that 3 trees are drawn in the poster, and are labeled 1, 2, and 3. Can you tell which tree is in the foreground, middle ground, and background?
