Neuro Reading for Second Grade

Neuro Reading is a reading fluency strategy that each child K-2 at Summit Flat Rock partakes in. For a 15-20 minute period every day, our classroom is visited by paraprofessionals in the school. Each para and the teacher takes a group of 4-5 students who are all at the same A-Z Reader level.

Neuro Reading is a strategy to help build reading fluency. We focus on reading a word correctly the very first time to build pathways between the letters that spell a word and the word that those letters make. We also focus on always using our finger to follow along as we read so that we can read steadily and smoothly. We read a book for as long as it takes for all of the students to become proficient with that book, learn all of the words in the book, and practice reading the book fluently.

Just in the first few weeks of implementing this strategy, the paraprofessionals and I have seen drastic improvements in fluency and sight word recognition.
