Mrs. Melanie Castellese

4th - 5th Grade : September

For the month of September, students will be learning about the color wheel, color groups, and color mixing. Students will learn about the 3 primary colors (red, yellow, and blue), as well as the secondary colors (orange, purple, and green). Students will learn how to use the primary colors to create their own secondary colors.

To begin color mixing, students will create their own color wheel using colored pencils. They will use the primary colors to mix their own secondary colors.

Once students have mastered color mixing, they will apply their knowledge to a larger project. Students will learn about the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos, which is very similar to Halloween. Both holidays use skulls and skeletons as symbols. However, Dia de los Muertos uses images that are bright, colorful, full of patterns, and that are joyous.

For their project, students will trace a skull template in the middle of their paper. They will create a border around their skull. Then students will create patterns around the border by creating stripes. Students must use straight lines, curvy lines, and jagged lines. Then students will color their work using colored pencils. Students may only use the 3 primary colors, but must mix them to include secondary colors in their finished artwork. The result should be a highly patterned and brightly colored skull for Dia de los Muertos!

Here are some examples created by me, Mrs. Castellese:
