Summer News for August 2010

Laptop Rollout:

The final laptop rollout is scheduled for Monday, September 13th from 3:30 to 6:00.   If students decide to get a laptop after the September 13th rollout, there will be a 45 day waiting period to receive a laptop.

Laptops will be handed out September 13th from 3:30PM-6:00PM. The rental deposit is $100 and insurance fee is $50. A total of $150 will be required at pickup. A parent/guardian is required to attend with the student.  For further updates, check http://www.summit-academy.com/ and click on the technology link.

House Information:

Houses will remain the same for the 2010-11 school year. The 6th grade house is the "Black Cobras." The 7th grade house is the "Red Phoenixes" and finally, the 8th grade house is the "Blue Sabers." We encourage parents to purchase a shirt in your child's house color this summer while school shopping. House color days are a hoot. The hallways are filled with a sea of black, red, and blue.

Dress Code:

The dress code included in this newsletter. Please note that all pants are NON-DENIM. Colored jeans are not permitted.

School Drop-Off and Dismissal Procedures:

Students shall be dropped off at the middle school front doors and shall enter immediately. Traffic follows the 2-lane drive that goes around the middle school and exits onto Sibley Rd. For dismissal, students are released at the back doors (those closest to Sibley near the MS gym). Parents may begin lining up at those doors. We ask that the right lane stays clear for those cars that need to exit.

School Hours:

School begins promptly at 7:55 AM and ends at 2:55 PM. Students coming in after the tardy bell rings at 7:55 AM will need to report and sign in at the office for a tardy pass.

Extension Hours:

Students arriving early should be dropped off at The PEAK ice arena located right hear on our campus. Drop off can begin as early as 6:30 AM. There is no charge for this service. Inside The PEAK are vending services and arcade games. Students can also sit and work on homework, or play on their laptops, as The PEAK also has wireless internet.

Students needing to extend their day at the end of the day can also do this in a couple of ways. The PEAK is open for relaxing, hanging out with friends, buying snacks, or playing games. The middle school also has an afterschool room. The room will post the sign for pick up outside the egress door. There is no charge for this service. Students are encouraged to do their homework, as the leader of the room is a certified teacher and is very willing to help as needed. This service is until 5 PM. Any students needing additional extension will be sent to The PEAK.

Lunch Procedures:

Summit Academy MS has a hot lunch service provided by Variety Food Services. We send home a monthly menu. It is also posted on our website. Nutritional and Carbohydrate information is also available. The MS lunch price is $2.50 and includes either white or chocolate milk, which is to be specified when ordering. Lunch ordering takes place twice a month. Order forms/calendars will be sent home and must be returned with the payment and lunch choices selected. If a student fails to return the paperwork, he or she will only be able to order a "B" lunch until the following lunch cycle. Also The Academy has vending services. There will be a "healthy snacks" vending machine in the cafeteria during lunch hours. The charging of lunches is not permitted.

First Day of School is September 7th:

Students do not need to bring all of their supplies. This is a day to get to meet all teachers, learn new procedures, and get to learn what classes are about, as well as other opportunities the MS provides. There will be an assembly in the morning and any parent wishing to attend may do so. The schedule for the first day will go from 7:55-12:00 noon.

Parent Volunteers:

We welcome all parent volunteers! Just sign in for a visitor's pass at any time! You will also need to fill out a background check form, as all volunteers must be cleared.

F.A.C.T.: What is it?

The purpose of FACT is to foster a close relationship between parents and the school, to encourage family participation in school activities, to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas that support the mission of the school and to raise funds for the cultural and educational enrichment of the students. We encourage all parents to attend to support the MS/HS. Meetings take place the first Tuesday of each month (unless otherwise specified) at 6 PM in the MS Teacher's Lounge.
