Chelsie Hedke Class of 2001, 6th Grade Summit Middle School Teacher
Dragon pride is alive and well among alumni! As a proud graduate of Summit Academy High School, I reflect daily on my valuable experience as a student, athlete, and, now, teacher at Summit Academy. It was in the halls I still walk today where I was filled with joy and passion for the downriver community. The care and compassion that lavished on me as a student by Summit teachers and staff helped me develop dreams and friendships that I still maintain today. Summit Academy has been an endless resource of personal and professional development.
When I applied to the Masters of Elementary Education program at Vanderbilt University, I was asked about my purpose for application. Though my college years were most fresh in my mind, the depths of my passion for teaching were rooted in my years at Summit. I spoke of the passion of my high school teachers that would challenge any professional. Again and again, I watched Summit teachers go above and beyond the rubric of teaching and reach the hearts of my classmates transforming us all into lifelong learners. My purpose for application was to be one of those Summit teachers, reaching the young with joy and passion and raising the bar for an entire community. Happily, Vanderbilt lauded the Summit teachers mentioned in my application by welcoming me to the program and ultimately awarding this Summit graduate a Master’s degree.
Now, I return to Summit Academy to do whatever it takes, one life at a time.
Technology at Summit
Summit Academy offers your sixth through ninth child a laptop to take home every day for learning at school AND at home!
Summit Academy Schools has always been proactive in the implementation of new technologies. We provide a one to one laptop program for grades 6-9 and a three to one ratio of computers in our elementary schools, wireless laptop carts in all of our facilities, interactive whiteboards and additional computer labs in our high school. It is with great excitement that we announce the opening of a new cybercafé for our students in the fall of the 2010-11 school year! Secondary students will have the opportunity to take a variety of on-line classes.
Technology is integrated into nearly every part of our lives. Our students are competitive in the global market with their skills in technology. They are equipped with the knowledge to use 21st Century Skills! We strive to develop students who are capable problem solvers with technology use.
The goals of our One to One laptop program are:
- Immersion in technology to provide them with comprehensive technological skills.
- Increase engagement in their studies with lower absenteeism and disciplinary problems.
- 21st Century literacy skills, new learning, enhanced communication, and higher level thinking for the information age.
- Increased parent involvement and satisfaction.
- Enhanced student achievement
Give your child the Summit advantage where learning comes alive every single day!
Bridges from Pasta?
The weekend of March 20, ten, 9th grade students represented Summit Academy North High School at Ferris State University’s Spaghetti Bridge Competition. Along with 19 other high school teams throughout Michigan, Summit Academy’s Nerdy Noodles and Pasta Penguins chose a bridge, wrote a 6-12 page research paper, composed a 6-12 minute oral presentation, and built a true to scale bridge made only from pasta. Additionally, while at Ferris State teams built a bridge that held at least 5.5 lbs, spans a 24" inch gap, was made only of 3 pieces of lasagna, 2 boxes of spaghetti, and 6 large hot glue sticks.
As one of the youngest teams in the competition, Summit Academy exuded creativity and confidence as they presented their bridges to the judges. Awards were given to the top 5 teams in each category. The Nerdy Noodles earned 5th place in the written competition. The Pasta Penguins earned 3rd place in the oral presentation. Plans are already beginning for next year’s competition!
2010 Basketball Champions
The final game of the regular season was an overtime thriller at Michigan Collegiate, 48-43. Jameel Harmon got his own rebound and made a 10 foot shot as time expired to tie the game in regulation, 39-39. The rebounding of the young dragons in overtime helped them earn a victory 48-43 and earn the number one seed and home court for the playoffs. In the semi-final game, the young dragons easily defeated Cesar Chavez 59-33, putting them into the championship game and a rematch against Michigan Collegiate. This game was destined to be the best of the year, and it was, a thrilling final which ended in a Summit victory! It was a tight game as both teams made almost every shot in the first half. Summit started to pull away in the second half but Michigan Collegiate mounted a huge comeback and went ahead by a point with less than 30 seconds to go in the game. Summit’s Jameel Harmon was fouled. He sank two foul shots to put Summit back up by a point. A turnover by Michigan Collegiate and a quick foul put Jameel Harmon back to the free throw line. He made one of his two free throw shots to put Summit up by two. The gym was rocking with 5 seconds to go and the crowd rushed the floor at the final buzzer after a long 3-pointer by Michigan Collegiate went wide. The final score ended in a 39-37 Summit victory. Congratulations to Coach Munro and all the Dragons as they ended the season with an 8-1 record and became the 2010 CSC Middle School Basketball Champions.
