Is the computer mine to keep?
No, the computer is Summit Academy's computer.

Can we take the laptop home?
Yes. All students will be able to take the laptop home through the school year after their one hundred dollar refundable deposit has been paid.

Can I take it home in the summer?
No, all laptops will be returned in June. There will be a date scheduled where refunds will be made at the same time the laptop is returned. As soon as this date is determined, it will be posted on the website.

Will we get back the same laptop after summer?
Yes, we will be returning the same laptop at the start of the school year to each student.

What happens if the laptop is stolen from my house or car?
You are responsible for the laptop while it is checked out to you. Immediately report a theft to both Summit Academy and the police and complete all necessary police reports. You should also contact your insurance agent to see if a claim can be made to help you pay for its replacement.

What are the consequences for laptop damage?
The cost of the damages will be deducted from the payment made. If the cost of repair exceeds your deposit, you will be billed for the balance.

What if I don't have wireless at home?
The laptops can be connected to the Internet by a network cable in addition to wireless, so you can use a cable modem or DSL connection if you have it. Internet access at home is not a requirement as access at school will be available every day, as well as before and after school. Students will learn to save content to their laptops that can be viewed later such as research for an assignment.

Will you cash the check or just hold the check until we return the laptop?
The check will be cashed. Your deposit will be returned promptly at the end of the school year by a check from Summit Academy as long as the laptop is returned in good condition. If the laptop is damaged, it will be repaired first and the costs of repair will be deducted from your deposit before a refund is issued. If the cost of repair exceeds your deposit, you will be billed for the balance.

Is there a tracking device on the laptop?
Yes, we have installed special software that tracks the computer if stolen as well as registered with a national security database called STOP.

Can I use my laptop at lunch?
No, you will be required to store your laptop in your locker during lunch.

Are the bags connected to the laptop?
No, the laptops will sit on four non-slip pads inside the bag but it is not connected.

Do we have to keep the laptop in the case at home?
It is advised to work on the laptop in the case to help minimize accidental damage and keep it best protected.

Why do we have to keep it in our cases?
To protect the laptops from accidental damage.

Can we buy our own bag?
No, you must use the Summit Academy provided case that has been evaluated to provide good protection to the laptop.

When do we pay the $150?
The night of the laptop rollout evenings.

What if I cannot afford the deposit?
Request for accommodations can be made to the building administrator.

Can we pay in payments?
We do not have accounting methods in place to allow for payment plans at this time.

Can we use family account monies for the deposit?
The payment must be made in full and a request should go directly to FACT for reimbursement if money is available in one's family account. Receipt of payment must be given to FACT with this request.

Can I choose the color I want?
Sure, as long as you choose white. :)

What things will I be allowed to do at school?
You will be able to use all programs installed on the laptop at school. Each classroom teacher will determine what is allowed in his or her classroom and what is appropriate classroom use.

Will the Internet be blocked or filtered at home?
No, it will be up to each family to help ensure a safe environment while using the Internet at home. It is advised for student computing to take place in a central area o f the home and not in the student's bedroom.

Can I take it home every night?
Yes, students will be required to take their laptop home every evening.

What if I don't have wireless at home?
That's okay, Internet access at home is not a requirement as access at school will be available every day, as well as before and after school. Students will learn to save content to their laptops that can be viewed later such as research for an assignment.

Can I go on games at home?
Yes, you can play web-based games while at home but may not install any additional software.

What programs can I use at home?
You can use any programs installed on your computer while at home.

When I am home how do I troubleshoot?
Students are encouraged to use the Help feature in all applications, AtomicLearning web-based video tutorials, the school technology website and their friends. The technology department will have posted hours for support and a helpdesk system where questions can be answered. After hours support will not be available.

Will there be someone to help me?
A help desk system will be in place but students are encouraged to investigate solutions on their own by using the resources available to them before opening a ticket. You can find it at Web Help Desk.

Can we use iChat to video conference with our teachers if we have a question about work?
Teachers will let their students know if this is something they will be able to do.

Do they need to clear the documents folder when they return the laptops at the end of the year?
No, this will not need to be done. If a student wants to save data from one year to the next, it is advised that the student saves any important information to a flash drive, CD or some other form of personal storage.

How will Internet access at home be provided?
Internet access will be provided at school. Homework assignments may not require the use of the Internet. Coffee shops and many restaurants now provide free wireless access if Internet is not available at home.

No, all laptops must be returned at the end of the school year.

Can they load other software to the computer?
No software may be installed other than what Summit Academy has pre-installed.

If they have their own Mac lap top can they bring it instead of using one of ours?
No, only school assigned laptops will be allowed on our school network. School assigned laptops have the required software for the educational curriculum.

Can they purchase their own mouse and headphones to be used with their laptops?
Yes, students may and are encouraged to bring their own headphones when needed for school related projects.

Can they purchase a soft cover for their laptops?
Yes. As long as the cover slides over the laptop smoothly and is easily removed when needed.

Can I use my credit card for the deposit?
No, payments must be made with cash or check written out to Summit Academy.

Do I have to give you $150 for each of my students?
No, the deposit is per family.

If I opt for insurance do I have to pay for each child in my family if I have multiple children?
Yes, the insurance policy is PER laptop.

Why are the 10th, 11th, and 12th graders not receiving laptops?
We would love to provide laptops for all students but the cost is prohibitive. Research and programs around the nation have shown middle school age students to be a successful age group to start a laptop program. We are fortunate to extend this program to 9th grade as well this year.

Will issues such as inappropriate content visited/saved on the computer be addressed?
Yes. The school code of conduct will be followed for all infractions.

Will the students receive an owner's manual?
No, but reference websites will be posted on the 1-1 web page that will give information to help the students become familiar with the laptop.

Can we connect our laptops to a dial up internet connection?
We currently only support connections using network cables and wireless. A usb modem can be purchased by the family for cases where students only have access to dial-up internet services at home.

Will laptops be connected to printers, and if so - what printer?
Students will be able to add whatever printers they need added at school since they are all network printers. At home students will be able to add USB and wireless printers.

Can students use their laptops to download/purchase iTunes?
If students buy songs or videos and lose them, it is not the school's responsibility to recover or back up these items.

When we save to the computer, where do we save documents?
All documents will be saved to their Documents folder located ON the
hard drive of their laptop. Students are responsible for manually
making a copy of this data to their network folder, a flash drive, or a CD as
a back-up.
