  1 to 1 Laptop Program Announcement for 2010 - 2011

All students in 6th through 9th grades may participate. There will be one fee PER laptop regardless of whether or not there are multiple students from the same family.

ALL students will pay $150 to take the laptop home (during the school year only, NOT the summer)  $100 is refundable (minus any charges for damage).  $50 is for insurance which is required and not refundable.  There will be NO EXCEPTIONS to this. Please note - a $100 balance must be kept in your account at all times. This means that insurance deductibles and/or repairs must be paid for before the students' laptops are returned to them.

A computer will be available in the classroom for students who are not a part of this program.

We will allow students to bring in personal wireless laptops in place of a school owned laptop. The tech center must approve of the device to allow access to the wireless network only. Access will be given to the Internet only.  This will include Moodle access but not school printers or the school network; ONLY internet access on the wireless network for personal laptops will be granted. Students will still be able to turn in work via Moodle or Gaggle mail.

We have put many programs in place, within Summit Academy Schools, to give our kids the advantages they deserve in today’s global economy. We also know we have to provide them with every opportunity to increase their knowledge in the area of technology, and take advantage of their natural eagerness to utilize technology in education.

As parents, you have seen how our kids have changed dramatically in how they learn and process what is happening in our society.  Before, we used paper, pencils, chalkboard, and books.  Our kids, however, are used to highly advanced technical devices.   Society has taught our young people to be extremely comfortable utilizing and depending on technology tools for education, work, and play.  It is “first hand” to them.  They are “the digital generation,” or better known as digital natives (these are young people who grew up with video games, computers, the internet, mobile phones, instant messaging, and digital cameras).  These things are an integral part of their reality.  It makes sense that technology is their “genre of choice."  They are very engaged while using technology, and it is this engagement we will utilize in the 1 to 1 laptop program.

Summit Academy Schools is providing a 21st Century learning environment.  With the 1 to 1 program, our students will be working on digital  curriculum; and teachers will be using blogs, wikis and podcasts to enhance learning.  The future content that our kids are to learn is largely digital and technological, which includes software, hardware, nanotechnology and robotics, along with the standard mathematics, language arts, ethics, politics, and sociology - among others.  We want our students to be the leaders in these areas.  Our kids are multi-taskers, expert technologists, and active learners.  We know from research that 1 to 1 programs improve student academic achievement; students demonstrate better analytical skills, collaborate more, and have lower absenteeism.  Technology enhances both gifted programs and recovery programs.
